We are the Pueblo West Speech and Debate team! We excel in performances in humor, drama, extemperaneous speaking, poetry, Lincoln Douglas Debate, OO, Public Forum Debate and more! We are a progressing team, constantly evolving and becoming better and better in both quantity and quality every year.

Speech and Debate events emphasize public speaking, performing, and critical thinking; these are skills that everyone truly needs no matter what they decide to do in the future. Mastering these skills allows our students to follow the path taken by thousands of the most successful artists, lawyers, politicians, and business leaders in the world. This list includes but is not limited to: Oprah Winfrey, Brad Pitt, Bill Clinton, Ted Turner, Kelsey Grammer, Adam Sandler, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, Lyndon B. Johnson, Tom Brokaw, David Blool, JFK's speech writer, Ted Sorenson and the list continues. 60% of all current State Senators and Representatives participated in Speech and Debate. Around 90% of competitors go to college and the majority continues on to graduate school.

Speech and Debate is unlike most other sports for several reasons. The season lasts from the beginning of October to the middle of June with the conclusion of the National tournament. Our tournament are held almost every Saturday during the season and usually take twelve or more hours. Several tournaments are held for multiple days. This sport requires dedication and commitment from the students and teachers.

What do we do on all these Saturdays? Well, we compete against other competitors from around the nation. In rounds we perform poetry pieces that bring out the poet in everyone, or our drama pieces that leave not a dry eye in the room. For debate we will spend hours and hours toiling over cases that leave no one standing. Or we research a question in less than 30 minutes and then give a 7 minute speech in front of a lone judge.

We have one of the most successful teams in the state. We have held All City Championships since 2004. We have had national qualifiers for the last six years; one of whom was a semi-finalist at the National Tournament. We have numerous competitors place 2nd at the state competition and we have a State Championship in Public Forum Debate. Overall our team has some of the top competitors in the state and constantly works towards bettering themselves and their teammates. Check out other pages for more accomplishments!
